The quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala. It comes from the Trogon family of birds where are almost 40 different species. It's a beautiful bird with red, green, and white feathers. The body of a quetzal is 14 to 16 inches long. The male quetzal birds have long tail feathers that can grow up to about 24 inches long. The upper body and wings are green, the stomach is red, and the beak is yellow. Female quetzals have shorter tail feathers and aren't as brightly colored as male quetzals. They also have black beaks. Cutting down trees has made the quetzal an endangered species. The lack of trees means no home for the quetzal. It could soon be an extinct animal.
